........  luxury self-catered apartment in the heart of Zermatt

In 2010 the Daily Telegraph in the UK conducted a survey to find the Top 10 mountain/skiing restaurants - in the world.  The Top 2 places were taken by restaurants in Zermatt - 4th place went to a restaurant just over the hill in Cervinia.

Just like the skiing and the scenery, one runs out of superlatives in trying to describe eating-out in Zermatt.  For this reason, we would always recommend a self catering holiday here.  Why be restricted to one hotel dining room (excellent though it will be) when you can take your pick each night from some of the world's very best restaurants?

We have been coming to Zermatt for many years and we have still only visited a small fraction of the eating establishments on offer.  So there is plenty of scope for you to make new discoveries of your own - please let us know of any finds that you make.

All of the entries below are places that we have tried and would recommend - we hope you will find this page a useful guide to get you started.  As we have stated before, the tourist office website has a more comprehensive list of places to eat in Zermatt.

Zum See                                                                                   website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2045
As you ascend the bottom gondola lift, from Zermatt up to Furi, just before arriving at Furi look over to your right and you will see the small hamlet of Zum See.  There you will find our very favourite restaurant of all.  Their pasta dishes are out of this world, our very favourite is their lamb filet provençale.

Zum See is easily accessible to both skiers and walkers and is an ideal place to meet friends for a lunchtime meal that you will never forget.  Booking is essential.
Chez Heini                                                                               website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 1630
Right by Haus Roc, this is a real character restaurant, serving wonderful food.  Local lamb is the speciality and it is always superbly cooked, and an absolute must if you visit here.

The owner, Dan Daniell, is a local celebrity and performs a cabaret for his guests at the end of their meals.  This is always lot of fun and usually ends up with a good old sing-song with all the diners joining in.  Right by Haus Roc, and only open in the evening. Booking is advised.
Chez Vrony                                                                             website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2552
In the hamlet of Findeln, just below the Sunnegga nursery slope you will find this traditional Swiss restaurant, specialising in locally sourced organic produce. Eating here is not cheap, but it is worth it for a special treat.

This is another place where it is easy for skiers and walkers to meet for a scenically and gastronomically specatcular lunch. Booking is essential.
Fluhalp                                                                                    website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2597
Another of our real favourites, for it's views and wonderful pasta dishes.  Try the "Paliokingprawns" - it's our favourite.  Fluhalp is easily accessible to both skiers and walkers, so another good place for mixed parties to meet for lunch. In winter, bands play here at lunchtime, creating a very unique atmosphere.

The restaurant is just to the left, about half way down on the run from Rothorn back to Sunnegga.  Walkers will find a relatively flat and easy trail from Blauherd (just above Sunnegga). Booking is advised.
Findlerhof                                                                               website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2588
Also in Findeln,  is this very popular gourmet restaurant serving Mediterranean and regional delicacies.  Very good wine list and spectacular views of the Matterhorn.  If you like chocolate, look out for their "moelleux au chocolat" (Schokokuchen) - it's to die for!

Close to Chez Vrony, this is also a good place for  skiers and walkers to meet for lunch. Booking is essential.
Ristorante Al Bosco (Riffelalp Resort)                             website
Tel: +41 (0)27 966 0507
Part of the very impressive (but also quite pricey) Riffelalp Resort, this restaurant's claim to fame is it's Matterhorn Pizzas.  These are not only very good to eat, they are shaped like the Matterhorn so you can eat the very mountain you are looking at from your table!

Another good place for skiers and walkers to meet. Booking is essential at busy times.
Restaurant Spycher (Hotel Aristella)                               website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2041
Located on Steinmattweg, not far from Haus Roc, we like this place for it's speciality meat dishes. The chateaubriand is exceptional, with it's choice of sauces.  Very good wine list too.

Because it is in town, we would recommend this place for an evening meal. Booking is advised at busy times.
Le Mazot                                                                              website
Tel: +41 (0)27 966 0606
The Hotel-Restaurant "Le Mazot" is on Hofmattstrasse, right in the centre of Zermatt, about 500m from Haus Roc.

We like this cosy little place for it's meat specialities and exceptional quality, at a reasonable price.  Its "Apfeltörtli" (Apple Tart) is a delight and their house wine "Dole Mazot" is exceptional value for money. Booking is advised at busy times.
Othmar Ski Hut
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 1761
By the side of the piste on the way from Sunnegga back down to Haus Roc you will find this little gem of a ski hut.  The owner has a salmon farm in Alaska, where he spends his summers, and their speciality is Alaskan salmon, superbly cooked.

An excellent place to pop in for a drink on your last run down at the end of a hard day's skiing.
Blatten                                                                              website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 2096
Another good end-of-day place to relax, on the last run down just below Zum See on the left hand side of the piste.   Excellent range of foods and a lovely place to watch the sun go down behind the Matterhorn.  Try the lamb filet in puff pastry, delicious!
Chämi-Hitta                                                                        website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 1096
Just below Riffelalp.  Superb Swiss food.  Their ApfelStrudel is divine!

Chalet da Giuseppe                                                             website
Tel: +41 (0)27 967 1380
Just walk down the hill from the apartment for about 200 meters and at the end of the road on your left you will see the most fantastic Italian restaurant in Zermatt.  As the name suggests, Chalet da Giuseppe is run by a delightful (and very entertaining!) Italian gentleman called Giuseppe. All the food is authentic high quality Italian and the atomsphere is every bit as authentic as the food.  Booking is essential - in fact it is worth speaking to us before your trip because they can get booked up here quite a long way in advance.
Cervo                                                                                   website
Tel: +41 (0)27 968 1212
Cervo is a hotel/restaurant complex which has to be experienced for it's location, decor and the quality of its food.  It is  at the end of the Patrullarve ski run, right by the top of the lift up from the Sunnegga funicular bottom station. They serve food all day either inside or on a spectacularly located terrace, looking over the whole town.  A perfect place to end the day with a drink whilst watching the sun set behind the Matterhorn. Make sure that you have a walk around the inside of hotel to experience the very lavish decorations.  Booking is advised.
Zermatterstubli  (Le Gitan)                                               website
Tel: +41 (0)27 968 1940
This one for the fondue lovers (their champagne fondue is a speciality). It is on the main street, in front of Le Gitan and opposite the Hotel Post. If fondue isn't your thing then they do other foods, including excellent pasta dishes.
Booking is advised at busy times.
